Give Brussels Sprouts a Chance

Brussels sprouts are probably the most feared vegetable in existence.  As a little kid you probably got grossed out when you heard the words ‘Brussels sprouts’.  Let’s face it, the name even sounds disgusting.   I would have probably given them more of a chance if they were called ‘baby cabbage’, or ‘baby lettuce’.  We can always blame TV and school, because at some point you heard bad things about them like:  “Ewwwwww Brussels Sprouts, yuck!”  To this day you might still think they’re gross, and you might never have tried them!

Hey, I promise you that eating them is not a fear factor challenge.  Quick story, I was at a friend’s house eating Thanksgiving dinner one year and for the first time ever, I was presented the opportunity to try some Brussels sprouts.   My stomach turned and I was ready to just pass it over. But instead I put 3 little sprouts on my plate, and I actually had to tell my self, “it’s in your mind” and “give it a try, they might actually taste good”.

I forked one sprout and placed it on my tongue; the taste was just erotic!   Pardon me for that analogy, but after eating the last sprout on my plate, I didn’t ask for more turkey, gravy, stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, cranberries. Nope, I wanted more of those sexy Brussels sprouts!  I ate every last one in the serving dish… Hell, I even told the kids that they were gross so I could eat more!

So, here’s your opportunity to give these nutrient-dense, delectable little buds a try for yourself…

You will need:

  • Brussels sprouts
  • Sesame Oil
  • Soy sauce (I use low sodium)
  • Maple syrup
  • Garlic
  • Black pepper

Directions:

  • start off by cutting off the brown ends of the Brussels sprouts and pull off any yellow outer leaves then cut your sprouts in half.

Kardashians eatIn a bowl drizzle over your sprouts about

  • 1 tbsp of sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3-4 tbsp of maple syrup
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • 1-2 pinches of pepper

Mix together gently to coat the sprouts in all the sauce!

SproutsNow set you pan on high heat.  You’re going to want to hear a sizzle when you put your Brussels sprouts on the pan.Sprouts on a panMake sure to flip all your sprouts cut side down you really want them to brown up.Brown sproutsThey should be brown in about 5-6 minutes.  If not, give it a little more time and flip them over for about 4 minutes on its back side then serve!
